I'm going to take a second to set the record straight on a common misconception when it comes to bodybuilders.
They are often seen as vain because of how frequently they are caught checking themselves out in the mirror at the gym. But there is a very good, very reasonable, and entirely selfless explanation for this.
They are often seen as vain because of how frequently they are caught checking themselves out in the mirror at the gym. But there is a very good, very reasonable, and entirely selfless explanation for this.
From Schwarzenegger's autobiography, Arnold: Education of a Bodybuilder: "You look at your body in a mirror, not because you are narcissistic, but because you are trying to check your progress. It has nothing to do with being in love with yourself. Herta would never have told one of the track stars he was in love with himself because he had someone check his speed with a stopwatch. It just happens that the mirror, the scales and the tape measure are the only tools a bodybuilder has for determining his progress." |
Furthermore, flexing is an isometric exercise. Anyone worth their weight in iron knows that one of the keys to a good workout is keeping tension on the muscles. Thus, the person seen flexing at the gym is not getting an arrogant gander at the hunk (or hunkette) staring back in the mirror; the individual is checking to see what needs to be done while continuing to exercise.
