In February, I talked about Fred Delavier's Strength Training Anatomy being essential to any weight training library, but it goes without saying, if you have to pick one and only one book on the subject, Arnold's Encyclopedia is it.
Not only does Arnie offer 800 glorious, well-presented, detailed pages about every aspect of bodybuilding—diet, injury recovery, training technique and regimens, optimum rep weight, etc.—he covers hair styles as well!
How detailed? Nearly half the doorstop is devoted to weight training exercises! Seriously, 99.9 percent of questions anyone would ever have about pumping iron can be answered by this single book.
For example, what training methods do you incorporate into your workout? Before reading the Terminator’s bible, I had no idea I was doing super staggered drop sets.
No, I haven’t been getting really hammered to the point where I throw down my weights and scream, “To hell with this!”
A staggered set is when you work multiple muscle groups in rotation. Doing two exercises back-to-back without a break is referred to as a super set and lifting until you reach failure—i.e., muscle exhaustion, a.k.a. you can’t do another rep—then using a slightly lighter weight so you can keep going is called a drop set.
The depth and scope of this book is amazing.
If nothing else, at six pounds, you can drill a hole through the center of the thing and use it as a barbell plate—and that's the paperback!
I was so impressed, once I turned the last page, I sat down and wrote Arnold a "Thank You" letter . . .
