Clearly, my plan is working . . .
New goal: Earn the impulsive lower lip bite.
On a serious note, I will admit it's been interesting watching people's reactions as my physique has developed. In the bodybuilding community, there's a running joke about the expectation versus reality of how the world responds to a bodybuilder.
In person, my experience has been the exact opposite. Online, it's spot-on.
In person, my experience has been the exact opposite. Online, it's spot-on.
In public, women have been much more inclined to acknowledge and applaud my gains. Men, though it is clear they notice, remain stoically silent.
Online, this is reversed. Why? There are too many variables to say for sure. Perhaps it's because the guys I talk to in-person on a regular basis aren't—unlike most of my social media followers—gym rats, so they're less likely to appreciate the work I've put into my body. Of course, and it goes without saying, some dudes are uncomfortable commenting on another man's physique, especially face-to-face. As for the ladies' mirror response? Again, there's numerous possible factors but, if I had to narrow it down to the most likely candidate, it'd be the fact I live in the state with the highest obesity rate in the nation. In a land of wayward waistlines, it's no surprise that a guy whose chest sticks out farther than his stomach catches the eye of the opposite sex. The rare in-person sighting of a fit male could also explain why girls are willing to vocalize their approval (while reinforcing why boys remain mum) and justifies their Internet reticence: Bulging biceps and protruding pecs are a dime-a-dozen online. |
