I ran 1 1/2 miles (up from 1/4 mile) today! Hey, quit laughing, I'm a 40-year-old writer who hasn't had the need to walk briskly for the past two decades.
Needless to say, when I got back home, it wasn't pretty. I'm sure my body will recover, but my soul may be irreparably damaged. And, admittedly, I might have overdone it a bit: The muscle on the outer, front side of my left calf (Tibialis anterior) went kinda wonky on me at the end. I don't have to bother looking up what it controls because I learned first-hand—I couldn't flex my foot, i.e., my tootsie was dangling like a limp, wet noodle. |
However good this progress might sound, when it comes to cardio, it isn't that much of a surprise: Cardiovascular response is quick (compared to the slow progression of muscle development) and a person can start to see results in about a week.
In other news, word is apparently getting around about The Thor Challenge. Last week, Mr. Universe 2013 lent me encouragement; this week, his predecessor, Andy Polhill, did the same: "Amazing! As a child, I wanted to be the Hulk and you are doing the same with the God of Thunder, Thor." As exciting as this is, it means I now have not one, but two Mr. Universes looking over my shoulder. I would say it is time to hit the ground running but, as you know, I can't feel my foot . . . |
