In the second part of Jonathan Swift's 1726 masterpiece, Gulliver's Travels, the main character finds himself in the land of Brobdingnag, where everything is approximately 12 times normal size. This is exactly how I felt when I came upon this particular poison ivy plant.
Poison ivy leaflets typically range from 1 - 4 1/2 inches in length. This one is a daunting 9 1/2 inches! To make matters worse, studies have shown that the devil vine reacts violently to even the slightest elevation in CO2: It grows faster--i.e., is able to put on more foliage--and becomes more toxic. |
