Getting a blurb for my new book, Nature's Housekeeper, from none other than Survivorman himself, Mr. Les Stroud, is one thing. But you could have knocked me over with a feather when I discovered what was in the ol' mailbox today. Les sent me--not just a signed--but a personalized copy of Beyond Survivorman and . . . and the two-disc director's cut of Survivorman 10 Days as well as (drum roll) the yet-to-be domestically released Blu-Ray of, you guessed it, Season 5 of Survivorman. All star-struckedness aside, I will say that after I regained consciousness and started thumbing through Beyond Survivorman, I was more than impressed. It is a gorgeous book. Inspired by Stroud's filming of Beyond Survival, wherein he examines how various peoples and cultures eke out a living based on what nature provides, the text grants the reader a sneak-peak into the last indigenous tribes from around the globe. Les' investigation is second only to the jaw-dropping photography of Laura Bombier. |
Writers are peculiar people by nature and prone to odd habits and various eccentricities. However, one thing which is universal among authors is the post-manuscript completion celebration. Some go on week-long binges, others take a well-deserved vacation, while a few put away the .45 which they kept close at hand throughout the editorial process. Me? I whimsically went to the nearest tattoo parlor and got commemorative ink.
