Progress! I now warm-up with 20 pull-ups (fig. 1)--an inconceivable number four months ago, before doing ten chin-ups (fig. 2)—an exercise that was impossible for me back in November.
F.Y.I. 20 pull-ups is the max fitness goal for marines. Oorah!

For those who don't know the difference, there is a reason I can only do half as many chin-ups. They are harder. A lot harder.
A chin-up is where you come up on the same side of the bar as your hands. Try the two of them. Although you might not think it since both exercises have you pulling yourself up, chin-ups are more difficult because the direction your palms are facing determines whether you are primarily engaging your back muscles or your biceps. Even though chin-ups are harder, I'm going to try to muster the strength to do 12 this week as a tribute to Internet fitness phenomenon Anna Victoria, who's given The Thor Challenge an encouraging pat on the back: "Inspiring! Watching Gurnow’s transformation from dweeby pencil-pusher to chiseled god will make you want to go out and find your own inner superhero." Thanks, Anna! |
